"Once a fishing community, Koh Samui is now a buzzing cosmopolitan that offers a wide choice of nightlife along with cultural must-sees."

East of the mainland lies Koh Samui, the third largest Thai island behind Phuket and Koh Chang. The isle is dominated by vibrant greenery and bright white sands, surrounded by those seductive seas.

With a generous scatter of temples, a trip to the island is a great way to combine a lush beach break with a historical adventure. Take a trip to Big Buddha Beach on the northern coast, recognisable by its giant golden statue that sits on a small rocky island to the eastern end of the sands. The impressive monument is reached by a wide staircase decorated with colourful dragons, and is visited daily by Buddhist worshippers who come bearing offerings of fruit and flowers. The beach itself is fringed by waving palms, and its smooth sands and calm waters make it a great beach for families.
